Yalova is a province in the Republic of Turkey’s Marmara Region. On June 6, 1995, the province on the Marmara Sea coast became a province, while it was affiliated with Istanbul. According to TUIK data from February 2021, these municipalities have 6 districts, 14 municipalities, 51 neighbourhoods, and 43 villages. The region’s first settlements were around 3000 BC in prehistoric times. In the ancient region of Bithynia, the Hittites ruled in 2000 BC and the Phrygians in 1200 BC. Bithynian dynasties began to dominate the Persian-ruled region in the middle of the 5th century BC, and they established the independent Bithynia Kingdom in the 3rd century BC. Yalova fell under the control of the Byzantine Empire following the division of the Roman Empire in 395. The Battle of Bapheus took place around Yalova in 1302. In 1326, the Ottoman Empire took control of Yalova and its surroundings. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk lived in Yalova for the first time on August 19, 1929, and the house he built in Yalova, located in the Walking Mansion and Termal district within the Atatürk Research Institute within the borders of the central district, is visited as a museum by a large number of people. Yalova became a province on June 6, 1995, by incorporating Armutlu town of Gemlik district of Bursa province and Altinova, Subasi, and Kaytazdere towns of Karamursel district of Kocaeli province.
