Mersin Port Expansion Project

Mersin Port Expansion Project

Mersin Port Expansion Project

Mersin International Port is Turkey’s largest trade gateway to the world. Today, Mersin Port provides direct service to 5 continents with 2.6 million TEU containers and 10 million tons of conventional cargo capacity, directly employing over 3,000 people and indirectly employing more than 25,000 people. Mersin is an important logistics city of our country and Mersin Port is the most indispensable element of this ecosystem.
Despite the challenging impact of the pandemic in 2020, our port, which has realized 2 million TEU containers and 7.6 million tons of conventional business volume, must provide the necessary conditions to meet the capacity increase and growth demand needed by port users and regional stakeholders at a high level. This need is only possible with investment that will create capacity increase, and Mersin Port Expansion Project will provide solutions to the need for additional dock capacity.
The advantages of Mersin Port Expansion Project to Turkey and Mersin are as follows.
• The Expansion Project is the second stage of the EMH dock, which was launched in 2016 and allows 400-meter mega-ships to stop by Mersin Port, and includes the extension of the existing dock towards the sea of 380 meters and the expansion and filling of low water depth docks.
• Upon completion of the project, a modern blocked dock will be created on the west side of the dock, where military ships and larger cruise ships can dock.
• The minimum depth required by the port for mega ships is 15 meters and sufficient depth can only be achieved by extending the EMH Terminal in the direction of the sea.
• With the extension of the EMH Terminal, two 400-meter-long mega-ships, the largest ships in the world, can be serviced at the same time and ship waiting times can be optimized. With the increasing number of direct services, competitive freight and shorter transit times will be involved.
• Tax revenue, which has increased by 127 percent and is at a record level in line with the business volume that has increased by 130 percent since 2008, will increase further on a year-on-year basis and will strengthen Mersin’s development and economic strength.
